An ex-convict, John Agbontean, has been apprehended by operatives of the Edo State Police Command for allegedly attempting to rob a church of its end-of-year harvest thanksgiving funds.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Moses Joel Yamu, the suspect was caught in the act at the Restoration Gospel Ministry located on Oviasuyi Street, off Ogiemwenke Road in Benin City. Agbontean, who was armed with a cut-to-size gun, was arrested while trying to execute the robbery.
The arrest comes just two days after Agbontean regained freedom from Oko Prison, where he had been serving time for a previous offence.
During police interrogation, the suspect confessed to his recent release from prison and admitted planning the robbery with an accomplice, identified only as Ola, who managed to escape capture.
“The suspect disclosed that he and his accomplice targeted the church’s harvest thanksgiving proceeds. However, swift action by our operatives foiled their plans,” the statement revealed.
The police have launched a manhunt for Ola, while Agbontean remains in custody as investigations continue. Authorities have assured the public of their commitment to maintaining security, particularly during the festive season.
