The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has declared that clergymen sporting braided hair and clergywomen with heavy makeup will no longer be allowed to minister on the church’s altar.
Speaking during the church’s annual convention, Pastor Adeboye, who is 82 years old, addressed what he described as concerning trends among church workers. He stated that such practices would not be tolerated within the RCCG, emphasizing the need for modesty among those serving in leadership roles.
“In Yorubaland, the only men who braid hair are the priests of Sango, the god of thunder,” Adeboye remarked. “They say this is a new age and that we must be adaptable to what is going on. To continue as Sango priests? Not in this mission. Even after I’m gone, it will still not happen.”
The revered cleric also expressed strong disapproval of female pastors who, in his words, “make up to look like a representative of Nollywood.” He warned that any woman appearing on the RCCG altar with heavy makeup, false eyelashes, or similar adornments would be asked to step down.
“You may not like it. If you are my children, you can’t kill me. Do you know why men don’t makeup? I mean, real men. It’s because we have what is called a superiority complex. We stand before the Lord and say, ‘God, You did a good job creating us. You made no mistake,’” Adeboye added.
Pastor Adeboye further criticized the use of false nails and lashes, questioning the motives behind such choices. “When you begin to fix false nails, I wonder what you want to achieve – If God wanted to make you a bird, He would have given you a false nail and false eyelashes,” he said, urging his followers to embrace modesty and repent from what he described as “weird” appearances.
In a pointed message to women, the cleric argued that those who expose their bodies inappropriately are attempting to divert attention from their faces, believing themselves to be unattractive. “All my daughters listen to me: You are fearfully and wonderfully made. If anybody does not like you the way you are, it’s that person’s loss,” he concluded.
The announcement has sparked a conversation within and outside the church, as Pastor Adeboye’s firm stance on appearance and modesty underscores his commitment to traditional values within the RCCG.
