A security guard and a scavenger have been arrested in connection with the vandalism of road construction equipment at a flyover site in Ramat Park, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.
According to sources, the incident occurred over the weekend when a scavenger, whose identity remains unknown, was apprehended by local security personnel. The scavenger had allegedly been in the process of illegally transporting equipment from the construction site, including rods that had been sold to him by a worker at the site. His actions were reportedly interrupted when a security guard on duty noticed the suspicious activity.
An investigation into the matter revealed that the security guard, who is believed to have been complicit in the transaction, attempted to cover up the incident. He reportedly offered a bribe of N100,000 to the local vigilantes in an effort to have the scavenger released and to suppress evidence of the crime.
However, the vigilantes rejected the offer, viewing it as an attempt to obstruct justice. The situation quickly escalated, and both the security guard and the scavenger were detained by the vigilante group and handed over to the police for further investigation. They are now facing charges of conspiracy and vandalism.
Spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, CSP Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident but stated that he had yet to receive an update from the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at Ikpoba Hill, who had not responded to his calls at the time of the inquiry. The investigation is ongoing.
