President Bola Tinubu has inaugurated a new board of directors for the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, signalling a renewed push in the ongoing overhaul of Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.
The swearing-in ceremony, held in Abuja, introduced a fresh leadership team at the helm of the state-owned energy giant, with the president expressing confidence in their capacity to drive reform and transparency in the sector.
Among the key changes, Bayo Ojulari has assumed the role of Group Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Mele Kyari. Ahmadu Musa Kida now chairs the board as Non-Executive Chairman, replacing Pius Akinyelure. Adedapo Segun has been confirmed as the new Chief Financial Officer.
The board appointments, originally announced on 2 April, are compliant with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), which stipulates equitable representation from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. The new non-executive directors include:
Bello Rabiu (North-West), Yusuf Usman (North-East), Babs Omotowa (North-Central), a former Managing Director of Nigeria LNG, Austin Avuru (South-South), David Ige (South-West), Henry Obih (South-East)
Also joining the board are Lydia Shehu Jafiya, Permanent Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Finance, and Aminu Said Ahmed, representing the Ministry of Petroleum Resources.
Top government officials, including Finance Minister Wale Edun, Information Minister Mohammed Idris, and Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil) Heineken Lokpobiri, were present at the event.
The reconstitution of the NNPC board is viewed as a strategic move in President Tinubu’s broader agenda to reform the nation’s oil sector, enhance accountability, and bolster economic performance through efficient energy management.
