A woman has been arrested in Kano State after her husband, Hafizu Gausu, died following an alleged violent confrontation over his plan to marry a second wife.
The incident occurred on Friday evening in Katsalle, Rogo Local Government Area, where Gausu reportedly suffered a serious head injury and died.
A resident, Auwal Kazagi Rogo, told Daily Trust that residents rushed to the scene after hearing cries from Gausu’s wife, Bilkisu Sani, who allegedly raised an alarm that her husband had been slaughtered.
However, residents reportedly found Gausu with a severe injury to his head. He was said to have fallen into a pool of blood and died. A mark believed to be a bite was also reportedly found on one of his ears.
Police were alerted and subsequently arrived at the scene, taking away the deceased’s body as investigations commenced.
The incident has since been linked to an ongoing dispute over Gausu’s reported plan to marry another woman as his second wife.
According to residents, the proposed marriage had caused repeated disagreements between Gausu and Bilkisu, who allegedly opposed the plan and vowed to prevent it.
Community elders reportedly intervened in an attempt to resolve the dispute, but tensions between the couple allegedly continued.
Bilkisu has now been arrested as the prime suspect while police investigate the circumstances surrounding her husband’s death.
Gausu and Bilkisu had reportedly been married for almost seven years and had two children. She was also said to be pregnant at the time of the incident.
Sources further claimed that Gausu had asked the family of his fiancée to move the proposed wedding forward by two months, allegedly because of the opposition he faced from his wife.
Gausu was buried on Saturday morning in Rogo according to Islamic rites.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation.
