A 40-year-old married man identified as Tomiwa has been arrested in Ondo State over the alleged rape of a 20-year-old married woman with an intellectual disability.
The alleged incident occurred on September 9, 2026, at Ajegunle Street in Ore, Odigbo Local Government Area of the state.
The victim, who is reportedly four months pregnant, was allegedly sexually assaulted by the suspect, according to the Ondo State Agency for the Welfare of Persons with Disabilities.
The Chairman of the Agency, Princess Folashade Arise, disclosed the development on Friday, September 18, condemning the alleged assault and calling attention to the vulnerability of persons living with disabilities.
Arise said the incident was brought to the Agency’s attention by a concerned elder in the community.
She said she immediately contacted the Area Commander of the Nigeria Police Force in Ore, ACP Femi Iwasoku, who directed the Divisional Police Officer of Ore Division to take action.
Following the police intervention, the suspect was reportedly apprehended and taken into custody.
The Agency said the case is now being handled by the police, with investigations expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault.
The development has renewed concerns about the protection of vulnerable persons, particularly women and persons living with intellectual disabilities, from sexual violence and exploitation.
Authorities are expected to ensure that the investigation is thoroughly conducted and that the victim receives appropriate protection and support as the case progresses.
