The deplorable condition of the Oke Eletu–Ijede road in Lagos State has triggered fresh questions over the utilisation of funds reportedly allocated to the project, with residents facing dangerous potholes, difficult commuting and growing fears of accidents.
The road, which links communities in the Ijede LCDA axis, is currently described by residents as being in a terrifying state, raising concerns about the disconnect between reported government spending and the condition of the infrastructure on the ground.
More troubling are claims that over ₦16.2 billion was disbursed for the road project, according to the Lagos State 2025 Q4 Budget Implementation Report (BIR).
If the figure is accurate, the condition of the road raises a fundamental question: where did the money go?
A project reportedly backed by more than ₦16.2 billion should not be left in a condition where residents struggle to navigate pothole-riddled sections and motorists face the risk of accidents and traffic collisions.
The situation has therefore intensified calls for transparency from the Lagos State Government, particularly regarding the amount released, the contractor or contractors engaged, the scope of work executed, payments made and the current status of the project.
Government funds are appropriated for specific purposes, and residents have a right to know whether funds released for critical infrastructure have been fully and properly utilised.
The Lagos State Government and relevant authorities must therefore provide a detailed account of the reported ₦16.2 billion allocation and explain why the Oke Eletu–Ijede road remains in such a deplorable state.
The Lagos State Public Works Corporation must also move swiftly to address the deteriorating road and restore safe access for residents and motorists.
The demand is straightforward: account for the money, fix the road and give residents the infrastructure they were promised.
Questions over the reported expenditure will not disappear while the road remains a daily hazard for the people who depend on it.
