Taiwo Awoniyi has been drafted into Nigeria’s squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau after Victor Osimhen was ruled out through injury.
The Coventry City striker returns to the Super Eagles setup following the decision to withdraw Osimhen, who remains in recovery and has not been deemed fit enough for the upcoming international window.
Osimhen’s absence leaves Nigeria without one of its key attacking options as head coach Eric Chelle prepares his squad for two crucial qualifying fixtures.
Awoniyi, a former Nottingham Forest forward, now has the opportunity to step into the squad and stake his claim for a prominent role in the Super Eagles attack.
The striker will be expected to bring his experience and physical presence to Nigeria’s frontline as the team begins preparations for the qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
The Super Eagles will be looking to secure maximum points from the two fixtures as their campaign to qualify for the 2027 AFCON gathers momentum.
Awoniyi’s recall also gives Chelle another established attacking option as Nigeria navigates Osimhen’s injury absence.
