Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has disclosed that the leadership of the Senate is making efforts to secure return tickets for lawmakers who lost their party primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Akpabio made the revelation on Tuesday as the Senate resumed plenary after a four-week recess, admitting that the leadership of the red chamber was shocked by the large number of incumbent senators who failed to secure their parties’ nominations.
Reports indicate that about 40 serving senators across major political parties, including the APC, PDP and NDC, lost their bids to return to the National Assembly following the recently concluded primary elections.
Among the prominent lawmakers affected are Ned Nwoko, Gbenga Daniel, Danjuma Goje and Rufai Hanga.
Speaking during plenary, Akpabio congratulated senators who successfully secured their mandates while expressing optimism that those who lost out could still benefit from ongoing interventions by the Senate leadership.
According to him, the leadership of the upper legislative chamber is working across party lines to minimise disappointments among members affected by the outcome of the primaries.
“I felicitate, particularly those who have secured their mandates to represent their parties in the next election. I know that there will always be victories and disappointments, yet above every individual triumph stands a greater triumph, the triumph of democracy itself.
“And in this Senate, we have promised that we will have very few disappointments, and I do know that the Senate leader and the leadership of the Senate are working very hard towards that, so in advance, I will say congratulations to all of us across party lines,” Akpabio said.
