No fewer than 744 rehabilitated former terrorists have graduated from Nigeria’s deradicalisation programme in Gombe State, marking a significant milestone in the country’s ongoing counter-insurgency and peacebuilding efforts.
The development was disclosed by the Defence Headquarters, which confirmed that the beneficiaries have successfully completed various rehabilitation and reorientation initiatives designed to prepare them for reintegration into society.
According to the military, 733 of the graduates are Muslims, while 11 are Christians—highlighting the diverse backgrounds of those who underwent the programme aimed at deconstructing extremist ideologies and promoting peaceful coexistence.
The ex-combatants are now set to return to their respective communities, where they are expected to begin a new chapter of life as reformed citizens. Authorities say the initiative forms a critical component of Nigeria’s broader strategy to curb insurgency by combining military operations with non-kinetic approaches.
Security experts, however, have repeatedly stressed that successful reintegration will depend heavily on community acceptance, sustained monitoring, and the provision of economic opportunities to prevent relapse into violent extremism.
