The Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, has rolled out a grassroots security framework across Edo South Senatorial District, directing community youth leaders to establish advisory committees to combat rising insecurity.
The Benin monarch gave the directive during a strategic meeting with Okaighele (community youth leaders) at the Benin Royal Palace in Benin City, charging them to constitute committees of between five and ten trusted members in their respective communities to complement government efforts in tackling emerging security threats.
The initiative, which covers the seven Local Government Areas in Edo South, came shortly after the monarch’s meeting with traditional worshippers, native doctors, priests and priestesses, whom he had earlier urged to intensify spiritual efforts against banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes.
Oba Ewuare II explained that the committees would operate under a coordinated reporting structure, with security concerns channelled through their coordinator, Chief Emmanuel Iyase, Okao N’Oreguae, who supervises Ologbo and Ehor Dukedoms, before being forwarded to the appropriate authorities.
According to the royal father, the framework is rooted in the traditional neighbourhood watch system and is designed to strengthen community vigilance against criminal elements.
He, however, warned that the initiative must not be turned into an instrument for oppression, abuse of authority or the indiscriminate sale of communal lands.
“We do not want anyone fighting among themselves or taking lives. The purpose of this initiative is to promote peace in our communities,” the monarch declared.
Oba Ewuare II recalled the courage of Edo ancestors in defending their people and territories, insisting that crimes such as kidnapping, killings and banditry have no place in the state.
“Edo people are not afraid of challenges. Our ancestors fought wars, liberated our people and defended our land. Those plotting against Edo people are doomed. We do not curse; we communicate with our ancestors. Killings and kidnappings have no place here,” he said.
The revered monarch also appealed to herdsmen, kidnappers, armed robbers and other criminal elements to abandon their activities, stressing that Edo State must remain peaceful and safe for residents, visitors, investors and future generations.
He further offered prayers to God and the royal ancestors for enduring peace and security across Edo State and Nigeria.
Speaking at the meeting, the Akenuwa of Benin, Chief Osaigbovo Osamwonyi, urged the youth leaders to execute the assignment with diligence and a high sense of responsibility.
He emphasised the need to appoint only men of proven integrity, courage and deep knowledge of their communities.
“Search for fearless men of integrity who understand their environment and can effectively support this assignment. We will not cede any portion of Edo land. Our goal is to ensure the safety and security of our people,” Osamwonyi charged.
