On Tuesday, September 12, 2024, in Benin City, the African Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), in partnership with the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Program (RoLAC), held an interactive session with political parties and their candidates ahead of the Edo State governorship election billed for September 21, 2024.
The event aimed to create a platform for dialogue between the candidates and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to foster transparency and accountability in governance.
Reverend David Ugolor, CEO of ANEEJ, noted that the session provided a crucial opportunity for candidates to engage with civil society.
“Dialogue is a fundamental criterion for democracy, and we will continue to sustain this effort. After the election, we will ensure they are held accountable for their commitments,” Ugolor said.
Candidates from various political parties were present, including Dr. Udoh Oberaifo of the African Action Congress (AAC), Dr. Bright Enabulele of the Accord Party, Dr. Azemhe Azena of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), and Dr. Westly Osifo, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate. Each candidate took turns presenting their manifestos and vision for governing Edo State.
Dr. Oberaifo stressed the importance of electing leaders with experience in managing resources and creating wealth. He advocated for sustainable welfare programmes and called for the local manufacturing of batteries using the State’s lithium reserves.
Dr. Enabulele of the Accord Party highlighted the need to improve security to attract investors, while Dr. Osifo who represented the governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congresse, APC stressed the importance of adhering to the rule of law and promoting gender equality.
NNPP’s Dr. Azena promised free education for every Edo child and affordable access to tertiary institutions owned by the State. The candidates collectively agreed on the need to revamp the education sector and enhance the welfare of Edo citizens.
The session concluded with goodwill messages from the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, Comrade Festus Alenkhe, and various civil society organizations.
