The Association of Proprietors of Private Media Establishment of Nigeria (APPMEN) has called for stronger protection of children’s rights, improved welfare, and safer environments for Nigerian children as the country marked the 2026 Children’s Day celebration.
In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Chief Precious Enebuse, the association said children remain the foundation of Nigeria’s future and must be given the care, protection, and opportunities needed to thrive.
APPMEN lamented that many Nigerian children still face serious challenges threatening their health, education, and security, stressing that protecting children should not be seen as a favour but a collective responsibility owed by families, communities, government, and the media.
The association urged stakeholders to fully uphold the Child Rights Act and ensure that no child is denied access to quality healthcare, education, and legal protection because of poverty or circumstance.
According to the group, nutrition, immunisation, and mental well-being of children must also be prioritised across the country.
“As media proprietors, we pledge to use our platforms to promote awareness and accountability on child welfare issues,” the statement added.
On child safety, APPMEN advocated stronger policies against child abuse, trafficking, and unsafe environments, while also calling for responsible media reporting that protects the dignity and privacy of children.
The association further stressed the need for investments in skills development, sports, arts, and moral education to equip children for leadership and responsible citizenship in the future.
Further details obtained by this online newspaper revealed that APPMEN also commended teachers, healthcare workers, parents, civil society organisations, and media practitioners working tirelessly to improve the lives of children across Nigeria.
The group pledged to continue using the media as a tool for advocacy, education, and positive grassroots change.
“On this Children’s Day, let us move beyond celebration to commitment. When children are protected, healthy, and empowered, Nigeria grows stronger,” the statement said.
APPMEN also wished Nigerian children a happy celebration, assuring them that their future matters.
