The Edo State Consumer Protection Committee has seized several expired and allegedly adulterated products from Tivona Supermarket, opposite St. Paul Catholic Church along Airport Road, Benin City, raising fresh concerns over consumer safety and the sale of potentially harmful goods.

The products were confiscated on Monday, November 2, 2026, during an enforcement operation led by the committee’s chairman, Iyamu Osaro Culture.

According to the committee, its officials discovered several expired items allegedly displayed for sale on the supermarket’s shelves.

The affected products reportedly included rice, biscuits, creams, Chivita drinks, tomato products, palm oil, sanitary pads and Maggi chicken flavour.

The enforcement team also seized Cartier Red Wine, which the committee claimed had previously been confiscated during separate operations at Mission Road and Ford Mart.

Other drinks and confectionery products, including Planet Apple, Pure Palm Sap, D’Angelus and Angel, were also confiscated over allegations of adulteration.

Some plastic bottles with capacities below 200ml were equally seized during the exercise.

However, the committee clarified that not all products inspected at the supermarket were found to be unsafe, noting that other items passed its inspection.

Speaking on the operation, Culture said the exercise was part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to protect consumers from unsafe products and defend their rights.

He assured residents that monitoring and enforcement operations would continue across Edo State to ensure that traders and business operators comply with consumer protection standards.

The committee also urged residents to remain vigilant when shopping by checking product expiry dates, labels, seals and packaging before making purchases.

Consumers were further encouraged to report suspicious products to the appropriate authorities rather than risk their health by purchasing or consuming questionable items.

It is important to clarify that the report does not seek to discredit Tivona Supermarket or establish wrongdoing beyond the findings and allegations communicated by the committee. The objective is to inform the public about the products reportedly seized and highlight the importance of consumer safety.
