The Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has hailed Governor Monday Okpebholo’s decision to raise the state’s minimum wage to ₦75,000, describing the move as a significant show of solidarity with workers amid biting economic conditions.
Speaking at the May Day celebrations held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on Thursday, acting NLC Chairman Bernard Egwekhide praised the governor’s swift action just six months into office.
“You have exceeded our expectations as workers,” Egwekhide said. “Your commitment to the welfare of civil servants is commendable, and your interventions have strengthened our rights in a difficult economy.”
The wage adjustment represents a ₦5,000 increase from the previous ₦70,000 minimum, introduced under the State’s continuing effort to cushion the effects of inflation and rising living costs on its workforce.
Egwekhide also reflected on the May Day theme, “Reclaiming the Civil Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship”, calling it “timely and relevant” as it encapsulates the daily realities faced by workers in Nigeria.
