The Edo Specialist Hospital, Benin City, has taken a major step towards improving fertility treatment with the acquisition of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) equipment.

Speaking during a press briefing to mark the hospital’s seventh anniversary, the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Anthonia Njoku, said the new equipment would give couples struggling with infertility better access to advanced reproductive healthcare.

She praised Governor Monday Okpebholo for approving the purchase of the IVF equipment, describing the gesture as a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to improving healthcare services in Edo State.

Njoku also announced that the hospital’s residency training programme in Obstetrics and Gynaecology has received full accreditation from the West African College of Surgeons and the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. She added that the Family Medicine and Dentistry departments have also secured accreditation.

According to her, the state government’s support has continued to strengthen healthcare delivery across all levels. She disclosed that 126 contract workers were recently absorbed into the Edo State Civil Service, while the recruitment of more health professionals has created over 290 direct jobs.

The CMD further revealed that the hospital has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Mudiame University, Irrua, to serve as a teaching hospital for the training of medical students.

She said the hospital now offers comprehensive emergency obstetric and newborn care services to improve the health of mothers and newborns.

Njoku also disclosed that the facility has been enrolled under the Edo State Health Insurance Scheme and the National Health Insurance Authority, making it easier for beneficiaries of both programmes to access quality healthcare services at the hospital.
