Ahead of the upcoming September 21, 2024, governorship election in Edo State, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has declined to sign the Peace Accord, which was organised by the National Peace Committee (NPC).
The accord, facilitated by former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar, was intended to ensure a peaceful electoral process by committing all participating parties to non-violence.
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP), represented by its State chairman Tony Aziegbemi, refused to sign the accord, citing concerns over the recent arrest of its members.
Aziegbemi stated that the party would only consider signing the accord if the police release its arrested members.
Furthermore, he called for the arrest of certain APC members who he alleged were responsible for the Benin Airport attack on July 18, 2024, which resulted in the death of Police Inspector Akor Onuh. Onuh had been attached to Monday Okpebholo, the APC governorship candidate.
The Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who had at a press conference said it would not sign the peace accord later changed stance and signed the peace accord.
The refusal of the People’s Democratic Party to sign the Peace Accord raises concerns about potential unrest as the State heads into the final days of the governorship election campaign.
The National Peace Committee, which had arranged for all 18 political parties to sign the agreement, is yet to issue a response to the developments.
With tensions escalating, observers are urging the party to reconsider its position, ensuring a smooth and non-violent election process for Edo State.
