Governor Godwin Obaseki’s administration is reportedly intensifying efforts to compel Local Government workers in the State to vote for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo.

This follows failed attempts to coerce workers within the State’s civil service to back the PDP during previous meetings.

A letter dated 10th September 2024, with Reference No. S. 103/42, was distributed to all Local Government Chairmen and NULGE (Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees) branch leaders across Edo State.

The letter, signed by Mr. O.A. Uwubanmwen on behalf of the Local Government Service Commission, calls for a “sensitization” campaign aimed at encouraging local government workers, including primary healthcare staff, to support the PDP at the polls.

Titled “Sensitization of Workers on Edo State September 21st Gubernatorial Election 2024,” the letter instructs the local government leadership to mobilise workers for a sensitisation meeting on Friday, 13th September 2024, urging mass participation.

The letter states, “Chairmen are to facilitate the meeting personally and enjoin the staff for mass voting for PDP on the said date.”

This directive is seen as an escalation of the State government’s efforts to pressure its employees ahead of the September 21st elections. Reports have emerged suggesting that civil servants who fail to align with the PDP in the election could face consequences, including possible termination of employment.

To further secure the support of government staff, another letter dated 16th September 2024, addressed to key officials such as Permanent Secretaries and Heads of Departments, invited senior civil servants on Salary Grade Level 09/2 and above to a crucial meeting with Governor Obaseki.

This meeting, scheduled for 17th September at the Sir Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub in Benin City, is expected to further impress the importance of supporting the PDP in the election.

The letter also stressed the importance of attendance, stating that transportation would be provided to ensure no one misses the meeting, with specific pick-up points across Benin City.
