Former Edo State governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, has accepted the outcome of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Edo South Senatorial Primary, calling on party members to close ranks and work together for victory in the forthcoming general election.
In a statement issued after extensive consultations with party leaders, supporters, youths, women and stakeholders across Edo South, Nigeria and the diaspora, Ize-Iyamu said he accepted the party’s decision in good faith despite the controversy that trailed the primary.
“The APC Edo South Senatorial Primary has come to a close. Our party has completed its democratic process, and a candidate has emerged. I accept the decision of our party in good faith and appeal to all our members, followers and friends to do same,” he stated.
Describing the APC as a platform built on service, sacrifice and discipline, Ize-Iyamu stressed that no individual ambition should supersede the collective interest of the party.
“The All Progressives Congress is greater than any individual ambition. Political contests may test our preferences, but they must never diminish our common purpose,” he said.
He expressed appreciation to his supporters, coordinators, grassroots mobilisers and party faithful for their loyalty throughout the exercise, while also thanking supporters in the diaspora for standing by his senatorial ambition.
The former governorship candidate urged party members to reject division, embrace reconciliation and channel their energies towards ensuring the APC records victory in the general election.
“Now is the time to reconcile, close ranks, and focus on the greater task before us. The contest is behind us. The future is before us. Let us unite. Let us serve. Let us win for the APC, for Edo South and for the people of Edo State,” he declared.
Ize-Iyamu’s conciliatory position comes weeks after the Edo South APC senatorial primary descended into controversy following conflicting declarations by rival electoral officials.
The exercise produced two parallel results, with one faction of the electoral committee, led by Kabiru Ajana, declaring Hon. Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama winner after polling 27,154 votes, ahead of Senator Neda Imasuen with 13,580 votes and Ize-Iyamu with 6,785 votes.
However, another returning officer, Muhammadu Kabiru, announced a different outcome, declaring Ize-Iyamu the winner with 33,399 votes, while attributing 12,560 votes to Ogbeide-Ihama and 5,107 votes to Imasuen.
The conflicting declarations threw the party into uncertainty and heightened tensions among party faithful across the seven local government areas of Edo South.
Ize-Iyamu’s acceptance of the party’s final position is expected to ease tensions within the APC and strengthen efforts to present a united front ahead of the general election.
