The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced plans to blacklist employers who fail to provide accommodation and adequate welfare for corps members posted to their organisations.
Director-General of the NYSC, Brig.-Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, issued the directive during a working visit to the NYSC Kogi State Secretariat in Lokoja on Monday, ordering the Kogi State office to immediately stop posting corps members to private organisations that neither provide accommodation nor pay stipends.
Nafiu said employers participating in the scheme must create conducive working environments that promote learning, mentorship and skills development rather than exploit corps members.
He stressed that every place of primary assignment should offer meaningful professional experience and decent welfare to corps members throughout their service year.
The NYSC boss also assured serving corps members that he would engage the Kogi State Government on the payment of state allowances to improve their welfare.
He further disclosed that the scheme would roll out additional welfare packages from 2027, including enhanced transportation support to orientation camps, improved feeding arrangements and better-quality NYSC kits.
Nafiu urged corps members to take advantage of the NYSC’s entrepreneurship and skills acquisition programmes to build sustainable sources of income beyond their service year.
He also charged them to remain disciplined, diligent and committed to their national assignment while commending NYSC staff in Kogi State for their professionalism and dedication to duty.
Earlier, the Kogi State Coordinator of the NYSC, Chika Chris-Moneke, described the Director-General’s visit as a demonstration of purposeful leadership and unwavering commitment to the welfare of corps members and staff.
She disclosed that 3,953 corps members are currently serving across Kogi State’s 21 local government areas, supported by 106 NYSC staff.
