Nigerian veterinary doctor and chess player, Dr Lanre Seye Oluwalasinu, has delivered a remarkable performance at the 2026 FIDE World Amateur Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship in Abuja, emerging as the best Nigerian player in the Rapid event and clinching a bronze medal in the Under-2300 Blitz category.
Oluwalasinu’s impressive showing at the international championship further underlined his ability to combine professional excellence in veterinary medicine with high-level competitive chess.
The FIDE-rated tournament, hosted in Abuja, attracted chess players from different countries, with Oluwalasinu standing out as one of Nigeria’s strongest performers at the competition.
The medals were presented to him at the closing ceremony held at the Bolton White Hotel, Abuja, by the President of the Nigeria Chess Federation and former Gombe State Governor, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, OON.
His performance has since earned him widespread recognition, particularly from the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), which hailed the achievement as a product of years of discipline, resilience, hard work and consistency.
The President of the NVMA, Dr Moses Arokoyo, alongside members of the association’s National Executive Council, congratulated Oluwalasinu for distinguishing himself on the international chess stage.
Oluwalasinu, who previously served as Assistant General Secretary of the NVMA Edo State Chapter, has remained actively involved in competitive chess for several years while pursuing his career in veterinary medicine.
The association said his achievement demonstrated that professional excellence and sporting ambition could thrive side by side.
Through its National Publicity Secretary, Dr Simiat Adeogun, the NVMA said it was proud to celebrate one of its members whose success had brought recognition to both Nigerian chess and the veterinary profession.
The association congratulated Oluwalasinu and expressed optimism that his latest feat would spur him to even greater success and more medals in future competitions.
