The Nigerian business community is in mourning following the death of renowned entrepreneur and banking trailblazer, Pascal Gabriel Dozie, founder of the now-defunct Diamond Bank. The respected industrialist passed away at the age of 86 after an illness linked to old age, according to family sources.
Born on 9 April 1939 in Egbu, Owerri, in Imo State, Dozie rose from humble beginnings to become one of Nigeria’s most influential figures in finance and enterprise. He was widely recognised not only for establishing Diamond Bank, one of Nigeria’s foremost financial institutions before its merger with Access Bank, but also for his key role in building the country’s private sector.
In addition to founding Diamond Bank, Dozie co-founded African Capital Alliance, a leading investment firm, and Kunoch Limited, further cementing his legacy as a visionary entrepreneur. He also established the African Development Consulting Group, through which he advised multinational corporations such as Nestléand Pfizer on strategy and growth within the African market.
His academic journey took him to the United Kingdom, where he studied Economics at the London School of Economics, followed by a Master’s in Administrative Science from City University, London. These academic credentials laid a strong foundation for his impactful career in finance and consultancy.
Dozie was also a passionate advocate for education and ethical leadership. He served as Chairman of Pan-Atlantic University, where he played a vital role in shaping the institution’s governance and academic vision.
His corporate influence extended into telecommunications, where he served as Chairman of MTN Nigeria, overseeing a transformative period in the company’s history before stepping down and handing over to Ernest Ndukwe.
In recognition of his immense contributions to Nigeria’s banking and economic development, Dozie was awarded the National Honour of the Order of the Niger (OON).
A deeply respected patriarch, Pascal Dozie is survived by his wife, Chinyere Dozie, and their five children, along with a host of extended family, friends, and admirers across the globe.
Tributes have been pouring in from across the public and private sectors, hailing him as a pioneer who laid the groundwork for modern Nigerian banking and inspired a new generation of entrepreneurs.
