The Governing Council of Edo State University, Uzairue, has clarified recent rumours surrounding the alleged suspension of the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dawood O. Egbefo.
In a statement issued following an Extraordinary Council Meeting, the Council firmly rejected claims that Prof. Egbefo had been suspended or replaced, reaffirming his status as Acting Vice-Chancellor.
The communiqué, signed by Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Habib I. Ekhalefo, reiterated that no decision was made by the council to suspend Prof. Egbefo.
The council also stressed that its powers do not include the authority to unilaterally appoint or suspend a Vice-Chancellor or Acting Vice-Chancellor, actions which must be channelled through the Ministry of Education.
“The Governing Council reaffirms that Prof. Dawood Omolumen Egbefo remains the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Edo State University, as appointed by the Visitor of the University and confirmed in a formal letter from the Ministry of Education on May 31, 2024,” the statement read.
The controversy arose after an unapproved announcement was allegedly made by Emeritus Prof. T.O.K. Audu, the Chairman of the Governing Council, claiming that Engr. Prof. M.J.E. Evbogbai had been appointed as Acting Vice-Chancellor.
According to the council, this move was unauthorised and did not follow due process. The communiqué warned Engr. Prof. Evbogbai to desist from presenting himself as Acting Vice-Chancellor, stressing that any actions taken under his authority would be considered invalid.
“The council will not hesitate to take disciplinary action should Engr. Prof. Evbogbai continue to act in this capacity without official recognition,” the statement noted.
In concluding remarks, the council reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the best interests of the university, urging all stakeholders to respect proper channels of communication and decision-making processes.
This clarification comes after initial reports on November 4, alleging Prof. Egbefo’s suspension, sparked concerns within the university community. The Governing Council now seeks to quell any further confusion, assuring the academic community of its dedication to transparency and adherence to governance procedures.
