A lecturer with the Department of Medical Laboratory Science at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Matthew Uwuigbe, has been found dead in a hotel room after allegedly engaging the services of a 21-year-old sex worker.
The incident occurred in Ekpoma, headquarters of Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State, with the police receiving a report at about 8am on Monday, October 5, 2026.
Confirming the incident, Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said the hotel owner, manager and the woman who was with the deceased had been arrested and detained for questioning as investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death.
According to the police spokesperson, Uwuigbe, who was believed to be in his 50s, had lodged at the hotel and engaged the services of the 21-year-old woman.
The lecturer reportedly sent the woman out of the room to purchase water.
However, upon her return, she allegedly found Uwuigbe lying motionless inside the hotel room.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, as police investigators have commenced inquiries to determine what happened before and after the lecturer was found unresponsive.
ASP Ikoedem said the deceased’s remains had been deposited at a hospital mortuary for preservation pending further investigation.
The police have also commenced questioning of the hotel owner, manager and the woman who was reportedly with the deceased before his death.
The Edo State Police Command said the investigation would establish the cause of death and determine whether any criminal offence was committed in connection with the incident.
