The Edo State Government has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to poverty alleviation and social welfare following a strategic courtesy visit by the National Union of Market Traders Employers of Nigeria (NUMTEN), signaling a strengthened partnership aimed at improving the livelihoods of grassroots traders.
Speaking during the visit, the Honourable Commissioner for the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Bisi Idaomi Esq, reiterated the government’s strong commitment to people-centered policies that uplift the most vulnerable in society. She emphasized that the ministry’s core mandate revolves around empowerment programmes, targeted cash transfers, and sustainable support systems designed to support individuals at the lowest rung of the poverty ladder.
Dr. Idaomi further underscored the Edo State Government’s dedication to transparency, inclusivity, and accountability in the delivery of social welfare programmes. She noted that strategic partnerships with key stakeholders such as NUMTEN are critical to ensuring that interventions are well-targeted, impactful, and responsive to the real needs of the people.
She assured the union of the government’s readiness to explore collaborative frameworks that will expand access to financial support, strengthen market systems, and create opportunities for economic resilience among petty traders.
In his remarks, the Chairman of NUMTEN commended His Excellency, Governor Monday Okpebholo, for the proactive mandate given to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation under the SHINE Agenda, which prioritizes inclusive growth and sustainable poverty reduction.
He highlighted the unique challenges faced by petty traders, particularly their limited access to government-backed loans, commercial bank facilities, and grant opportunities.
According to him, these financial barriers continue to hinder the growth and stability of small-scale businesses across the state.
The Chairman therefore advocated for the implementation of a tailored loan scheme, such as the proposed NUMTEN Loan Scheme, specifically designed to support petty traders.
He noted that such an initiative would significantly ease financial constraints, boost small businesses, and enhance economic participation at the grassroots level.
The meeting reflects the Edo State Government’s broader vision of fostering strategic partnerships, empowering local communities, and building a resilient economy where no one is left behind.
