A frontline Edo South senatorial aspirant on the platform of the (APC), has issued a blunt warning to party leaders: do not gamble the party’s senatorial ticket on a newcomer.

Speaking in Benin City during his formal declaration before Edo South APC leaders, Ogbeide-Ihama insisted the race is too critical to be treated as an experiment or a “try-your-luck” venture. He urged stakeholders to prioritise tested capacity and political experience over fresh entrants “who want to learn on the job.”

The former two-term member of the House of Representatives argued that while all aspirants may be qualified, his legislative track record clearly sets him apart. According to him, Edo South cannot afford to hand such a strategic seat to an untested hand when experienced leadership is readily available.

Ogbeide-Ihama also dismissed insinuations that he had sought the backing of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, , to clinch the ticket. He maintained that even if such a move were made, it would not be out of place, stressing that “everyone needs support” in politics.

Recounting his political battles under the (PDP), he revealed how his campaign materials were repeatedly vandalised, yet he still emerged victorious. Now in the APC, he expressed confidence that the path ahead would be smoother, declaring that he is fully integrated into the party’s structure.

Making a case for generational shift, Ogbeide-Ihama said the political landscape is tilting towards younger leaders, insisting he possesses the energy and drive to effectively represent the seven local government areas in Edo South.

He highlighted past constituency interventions, including streetlight installations and empowerment initiatives such as vehicle distribution, pledging to scale up such projects across the district if given the mandate.

Earlier, Edo South APC leader and former deputy governor, , described the contest as a “family affair,” urging all aspirants to maintain decorum. He noted that while many are in the race, only one candidate will ultimately emerge, and called for a peaceful, issue-based campaign.
