Traders at the New Benin Market have endorsed the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Asue Ighodalo, and his running mate, Osarodion Ogie, expressing confidence in their ability to transform the fortunes of Edo State.
The endorsement took place during Ighodalo’s mid-morning visit to the market, which turned into a festive occasion as women danced and showed their support for the candidate, who was accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Ifeyinwa Ighodalo.
Mr. Ero Amienghomwan, Coordinator of the New Benin Market Christian Traders Fellowship, introduced Ighodalo to the enthusiastic crowd, expressing hope that by December 1, 2024, Ighodalo would be at Osadebey Avenue, the seat of Edo State Government.
Mrs. Blacky Ogiemen, President of Edo State Market Women/Traders, also rallied support for Ighodalo, urging the women to vote en masse for the PDP on September 21.
She reminded the market women that Ighodalo, born in the New Benin area, is their son, and encouraged them to be proud of him.
Ogiemen assured the traders that there would be no intimidation on election day and emphasized that Ighodalo has the capacity to continue the peace and development currently enjoyed in the state.
Mrs. Ifeyinwa Ighodalo expressed gratitude for the warm reception given to her husband and his entourage. She spoke about her husband’s commitment to fulfilling his promises and distributed aprons and wrappers to the women.
In his address, Ighodalo thanked the traders and promised to work diligently for the growth and prosperity of their businesses.
He assured them that those who previously harassed and intimidated them would no longer have a place in the market, using a light and darkness analogy to urge them to vote for the PDP.
Ighodalo stressed the importance of working together for the progress and development of Edo State, likening himself to a son returning to take care of his parents after they had labored to train him through school.
He vowed to work tirelessly to eradicate poverty in the state and ensure its development.
“We are the light. Vote for the PDP. It’s the light. There’s good and there’s bad. PDP represents good. So vote for PDP,” Ighodalo stated, as he called for unity and collective effort as the election approaches.
