Security operatives in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State have arrested some suspects over the alleged importation and sale of donkey meat reportedly preserved with chemicals suspected to be used for embalming corpses.
The suspects were apprehended by the Etsako West Local Government Security Task Force during an operation at the Uzairue International Market abattoir following disturbing reports that chemicals believed to be used in mortuaries were being applied to donkey meat to prevent it from spoiling.
During preliminary interrogation, the suspects allegedly admitted importing the meat and presented documents they claimed were customs papers authorising its importation.
However, the authenticity of the documents and allegations surrounding the use of embalming chemicals have yet to be independently verified.
Following the operation, the suspects were handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation and possible prosecution on the directive of the Executive Chairman of Etsako West Local Government, Hon. Romeo Aloaye Omoike.
The incident has triggered serious public health concerns, particularly over the safety of meat sold to unsuspecting consumers in the area.
The police are expected to establish the actual source of the donkey meat, verify the importation documents presented by the suspects and determine whether prohibited chemicals were used in its preservation.
The investigation is also expected to establish whether the alleged activities violated existing food safety regulations and identify anyone else connected to the suspected operation.
The local government reiterated its commitment to protecting residents from unsafe food products and ensuring that meat and other consumables sold in public markets meet acceptable health and safety standards.
Residents have been urged to remain vigilant as investigations into the disturbing development continue.
